You’ve  Seen Me

You’ve seen me in my Sunday best,

   My daily finery;

My new cocked hat, my silken vest,

   My latest sophistry.

You’ve seen me in the poshest clubs,

   So privately exclusive;

The grandest homes, the hottest tubs

   To all but few elusive.

You’ve seen me in the softest arms,

   The best society;

You’ve seen me give to lessers’ charms

   My greatest apathy.

You’ve seen me in the smartest schools

   Where bide the rich and famous;

You’ve seen me at the sides of those

   Whose gilded names inflame us.

You’ve seen me in the rummest places:

   London; Rome; Paree;

You’ve seen me in my bravest faces,

   Courting bankruptcy.

You’ve seen me in analysis

   With dome of polished chromium;

And now that you have seen all this,

   Friend, lend me your encomium.
