Be Still Now, My Heart

Hush! whispered (that dear voice!) to my sleeping ear!

Her voice—oh, I’m certain—(how soft!) yet how clear:

I love you, I love you, I love you, my heart!

So joyous was I that it gave you a start.

Breathless, I waited to hear it again…

But silence, in envy, concealed the refrain.

My eyes (how they ached!) for her lips to betray…

But darkness conspired; I divined not their play.

She lies close beside us (in semblance of sleep),

But truly—her voice it was made your blood leap!

I love you, I love you, I love you, my heart!

It’s true!—oh, rest now, let weariness part.

Forget now the words made you helpless, forlorn;

How she (hush, be still now) would leave you come morn.

You see now how foolish you were for to weep?

Be still now, my heart. Go back to sleep.
